Lincoln “Marty” Herrick was born in Springfield, Mass., on April 15, 1947, to Lincoln and Lillian Herrick. After a wonderful life, he passed on July 27 at home. He was surrounded by his wife, Vita, of 32 years, daughter Yolanda (Yo), grandson Kyle, along with other family members and friends.

Marty was passing through Pagosa in October 1974 heading to Telluride when he hit a deer and never left Pagosa.

As a youth, he played little league and later was a pitcher while in college in Florida. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan along with the Colorado Rockies.

Marty was a master builder, finish carpenter, cabinet maker, drawing complete sets of blueprints and motel desk clerk.

Marty met the love of his life “Vita” here in Pagosa and they enjoyed a wonderful life together.

Marty fought a long battle with cancer and was helped by many new and old friends who would drive him for radiation treatments in Durango and to appointments in Pagosa; he was always so appreciative.

He is survived by his wife, Vita, daughter Yo, grandson Kyle, granddaughter Hailey, family members and friends.

Once you met him, it did not take long to understand his sense of humor. Marty had a few favorite one-liners. A couple of them were: “No one gets out of here alive” and “Beam me up, Scotty.”

He was a calm, patient, kind person; he will be missed and remembered by so many whose lives he touched.

The family extends their sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone for the prayers, phone calls, cards, flowers, food and kind words during this time and during his illness, also to those who picked up prescriptions, grocery shopping and stopped by to brighten his day or take him for a ride. Also thank you to the Oncology Department at Pagosa Springs Medical Center, Mercy Hospice, Father Samuel Auta, Father Kenny Udumka, Pope John Paul II staff and AV Department. Thank you to all assisting with memorial Mass and lunch.

Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church. Eulogy at 9:45 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., interment immediately following at the Columbarium behind the church and lunch at the pavilion on the grounds of the church.
