Alice M. (Montoya) Young

In loving memory

Alice M. (Montoya) Young

Nov. 16, 1929-Dec. 17, 2011

“A Mother is she who can take the place of all others,

But whose place no one else can take.”

Mama, the day the Lord came for you,

We cried many tears just trying to get through.

A year has gone by since you went away,

But God only knows, you’re still with us today.

We send to you, Mother, our prayers and love,

Dear Lord in heaven, take care of her above.

Mother … We love you now, always and forever.

Tom, Beverly, Wanda, James, Charles, Sandra, Veda and Shana

My Christmas memory with Efren Dorame.

Seems like yesterday, that you were here with me,

Two hearts that loved each other, all so tenderly.

19 years of memories will never come to pass,

Alive every morning, like God’s light that always lasts.

On Christmas day, we made our vow, the words were bittersweet,

“Our love will be forever, sealed with this ring,”

Our promises to God, our souls we bound together,

God heard our words that day, that moment lives forever.

With your tender loving blessing, these words you did send,

“I’ll be your guardian angel, my love for you will help you mend.

“It will be so hard, I know, that you will have to stay,

Just remember always love … I am never far away.”

“Remember where I took you, South Dakota is our home,

Where you’ll find my love waiting, where you will never be alone.”

As we walked the road together, right to heaven’s door,

We kissed and said goodbye for now, your pain would be no more.

God took mercy on your life … March was time for you to go,

With a heaven full of escorts, he took your spirit home.

I miss you, Efren, every day! With tears that never slow …

You are my guardian angel, my guiding light, our love still grows.

Merry Christmas, Efren

You are forever loved and missed

“Lakota Woman”

With tender love, Cathy

Jack-2012-300John E. (Jack) Hummel, 70, died suddenly on Jan. 9 on the mountain he loved so well from extensive internal injuries to his chest, lungs and rib cage after an accident at the Wolf Creek Ski Area. Jack was skiing with his wife, Josie, when he veered off the groomed trail on Bunny Hop and crashed into a tree. He was wearing a helmet and had no head injuries.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Josie; his sister Mary Ann Akers and her husband Larry from Helena, Mont.; several cousins who live in the Eastern U.S.; as well as a multitude of golfing, skiing and hiking friends in Pagosa Springs. He was predeceased by his parents, John W. and Mary Daley Hummel, his aunts, Helen Reilly and Anne Reilly Daley, and his uncle, Edmund Daley.

Jack was born on Dec. 10, 1942, in Pottsville, Pa. He attended Nativity Catholic High School where he played on the football team and was involved in many other school activities. He played the violin, encouraged by his Aunt Helen, who also inspired his love of classical music. After graduating, he went to St. Charles Seminary in Pennsylvania and then Gregorian University in Rome, intending to become a priest. After a change of mind, he returned to the U.S. to attend La Salle University in Philadelphia where he graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude. He later did graduate work at Temple and Penn State universities, majoring in Spanish and early childhood education.

Jack was fluent in Spanish and Italian and competent in French. His language skills and love of people led him to work for Head Start, specializing in parental involvement, bilingual services and health care for low income families. Having loved the West all his life, he then moved to Denver where he switched careers, taking computer courses at Parks College and becoming a computer operations manager.

After Jack’s retirement in 2001, the Hummels moved to Pagosa Springs in 2003. They became regulars at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club where Jack was a long-time member of the Monday-Thursday skins group, and active members of the Gray Wolf Ski Club. Jack and Josie were avid skiers and Jack also hiked with this senior outdoors group. The Hummels enjoyed travel and adventure, camping all over the U.S. and also traveling extensively in Europe.

Jack loved to keep up to date on the latest sports equipment technologsy. He was famous for buying every new golf club, pair of skis and high-tech ski boots that came along, as the collection in his garage attests.

A funeral service was held Jan. 15 in Pennsylvania near Jack’s hometown of Pottsville, where he will be interred in the family plot at St. Patrick’s Church Calvary Cemetery. A celebration of Jack’s life will be scheduled in Pagosa Springs in the summer after his many “snowbird” golfing friends return from Arizona, Texas and Florida.

Jack’s sense of humor and enjoyment of life energized his friends. Always optimistic, he spread cheer with his wonderful laugh and jovial personality. We will cherish memories of our fun times together. To honor Jack, contributions may be made to the Michael J. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church at which she was a longtime member. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. There will be no visitation with family, but viewing will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home, 800 Center Ave., Brownwood. Pallbearers will be her two grandsons, Jeff Ash and Jason Gazaway; Ken Harris, Gerry Kelley, Troy Evans and Dennis Simpson.

Judy Ann was born to R.C. “Bob” and Jeanette King Wester on Oct. 13, 1941, in Albuquerque, N.M. She married the love of her life, Jerry B. Gazaway, on June 4, 1960, in Las Vegas, N.M. To this incredible loving relationship were born their two children, J. Byron and J’Nell Lynn. Throughout Jerry and Judy’s 52 years of marriage, they lived in numerous communities over the states of New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, with Pagosa Springs, Colo. (1978-1996) and Brownwood, Texas (1996 to present) being the two communities in which they spent most of their married lives.

Judy was indeed a rare jewel of a woman. Judy loved the Lord with all her heart, soul, mind and strength. She wanted everyone to know and love God. If Judy knew you, you can be sure that she prayed for you and your relationship with the Lord to be well. She also prayed for your life, marriage and business to be prosperous and pleasing to the Lord. We will dearly miss this mighty Proverb 31 woman of God.

Judy was zealously committed to being a loving wife, mom, grandma and friend. Her family was her greatest joy. She delighted in seeing her family and friends happy. Her favorite way to make us happy was to bake our favorite meals and desserts. And she was excellent at both! If she became aware of something that one of us needed, she would do her best to meet that need. Another way that she brought smiles to her family and friends was to send birthday, anniversary and get-well cards which were undoubtedly sealed with a heartfelt prayer.

After leaving the Army, Jerry worked for the City of Oceanside in the Parks and Recreation Department until he met the love of his life, Muriel Harguindeguy, in the summer of ’76. The following Christmas, he brought Muriel to the Rocky Mountains to meet his mother, and stepfather Bill Storm,(who had recently purchased a condo in Pagosa Springs), and proposed marriage on their drive back to California. They were married in San Francisco the following June and moved to Pagosa to build their lives together on July 4, 1977.

Jerry partnered with John Rowell to form Rowell/Buckley Construction, with the duo and their dedicated crew responsible for many custom homes and commercial buildings, including the renowned Keyah Grande west of town. He would eventually form Buckley Construction, and for 30 years built and remodeled homes, ranches, churches, pre-schools, restaurants and more. Jerry’s handiwork is evidenced all over Archuleta County and his legacy of crafting beautiful spaces will live on in the monuments he created, including the home he built and raised his family on Lake Pagosa.

Father to Melissa, born in 1980, and Nicole, born in 1983, Jerry was a doting father — not only to his girls, but to their friends as well. A big kid at heart, he was the first to take his pint-sized posse on critter hunts, trick-or-treating or on fort-building missions. Jerry leaves behind not just two daughters, but an army of their friends who will miss him dearly and forever have fond memories of time spent with Jer.

A voracious reader, proud lawn manicurist and talented craftsman, Jerry complimented said hobbies with trips to Mexico, Belize and beyond with Muriel in retirement.

Jerry is survived by wife, Muriel Buckley, daughters Melissa Buckley (and partner Chris) and Nicole Macomber (and husband Pete), mother and step-father (Bernice and Bill Storm) and his brothers Bob Buckley (and family) and Ron Buckley.

Loved by all, with his sweet smile and joking manner, Jerry has entered the loving house of Our Father where all who enter are comforted, healed and blessed with everlasting peace.

Donations can be made in Jerry’s honor to Sonlight Camp, Box 536, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147-0536, or Wounded Warrior Project, Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. A memorial will be held on Sunday, Feb 10, from 1-4 p.m. at Keyah Grande Guest House, formerly The Lodge. Carpool is encouraged. Come join us in sharing stories and celebrating memories.

memorium-trujilloOn Feb. 9, 2013, William T. Trujillo, aka Willie, would have celebrated his 100th birthday. Willie had a wish that someday he would live to be 100 so his picture could be in The Pagosa Springs SUN. Willie has been gone for 18 months but will never be forgotten. Even if he is not here with us, we are thinking of him and would still like to wish him a happy 100th birthday.

He touched our hearts,

Carmen Valdez, Renee Cordova, Tessie Curvey
