obit-Ron-Kop-PhotoRon Kop, age 63, of Delta, Colo., passed away peacefully on the morning of April 3 after a long battle with cancer. Ron was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing. Ron most recently had been a patient at Willow Tree Care Center, where he was visited daily by his family and dear friends. He so enjoyed and looked forward to these visits, and we want to extend our special thanks to all who either called Ron on the phone or came by to visit with him at Willow Tree.

Ron was born in Rotterdam, Holland, on April 25, 1950, to Teunis “Tony” and Hendrika “Henny” (Wijnands) Kop. Ron was 6 years old when his parents immigrated from Rotterdam, Holland, and came directly to Delta, arriving in the month of January 1957. Ron made this long journey from Holland to Delta with his parents, three brothers and three sisters. Another sister, Nellie, and brother, Michael, were born later in Delta.

Ron attended schools in Delta and Cedaredge. He also attended Mesa State College, where he majored in journalism. Ron’s first and foremost passion in life was writing. Ron worked for the Delta County Independent in the early years of his writing career. One of the highlights of his job working as a reporter for the Delta County Independent was to cover the story of President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, rafting and fishing along the Gunnison River near Pleasure Forks (Parks), located between Hotchkiss and Delta. Ron got to interview President Carter extensively that day. He was also the photographer on that story, so he took many photos of President and Mrs. Carter.

Besides his writing, Ron had two other great passions in life, one was the accumulation of artwork and the other was that he was an amateur archaeologist. Ron collected artwork for about 40 years and had quite a vast collection of beautiful artwork. Ron loved to explore all the canyons, mesas and plateaus located here on the Western Slope. He discovered many old archaeological sites. He was fascinated by all the petroglyphs we have in this area and intrigued by the unusual rock formations created by the Indians who inhabited this area so long ago.

Ron is survived by his two children, Peter Garrett (wife Allison), of Waco, Texas, and Callie Allard from New York, six grandchildren, and his seven remaining brothers and sisters, Dirk Kop, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Marcel Kop (wife Marsha) Montrose, Colo.; Henny Wiley (husband Bill) Montrose; Tony Kop (wife Shauna) Pagosa Springs; Carla Kop, Lakewood; Nellie Myers (husband Delbert), Delta; and Michael Kop (wife Natalie), Yellow Jacket, Colo. Also surviving is Ron’s best friend all throughout childhood and as adults, Dr. Dan Doyle. Ron is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Hendrika Kop, one infant brother, Alexander Kop, his sister, Letty Young, and his nephew, Michael Woodlee.

Cremation has taken place and a service for Ron is not planned at this time, but the scattering of ashes and celebration of Ron’s life will be announced and held later this spring or early summer.

Hospice and Palliative Care of Delta provided care for Ron during the last stages of his illness. If you choose to do so, a donation in memory of Ron may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Delta, P. O. Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.

Obituary-Jose ‘JoJo’ Elesio Martinez Jr. III

obit-martinez-colorJose “JoJo” Elesio Martinez, native of Pagosa Springs — The Man. The Friend. The Christian. The Legend. JoJo was born on May 7, 1960. The man we know as “Super Dad” died on May 1.

The strongest man with the most irrational fear has left us behind with only our memories of him to heal our loss. As a loving husband, father of three and grandfather of one, he gave us the tools and skills that we need to survive and to keep the quality of life alive with us.

Our Dad was a jack-of-all-trades. The “Tinker,” as most of us referred to him. From construction to welding, to rigging things up, to shooting, to hunting, to horsemanship. He always had projects, he was never bored. He had a love for horses that was incurable. As was his wine-making, gift of creating, and cooking and eating skills. Peanut butter would be his next love, besides Mom. And he wouldn’t go anywhere without an extra pair of socks.

Describing our Dad shouldn’t be so hard, normally it’s so easy; but under the circumstances I have asked friends and family the word(s) they would use to describe him:

Priceless, irreplaceable, humble, friend, joy, smiley, jokester, old-fashioned, true to his roots, real, honest, straight forward, badass, super dad, Pops, awesome, my brother, quality, top notch, buddy, perfectionist, wingman, hardworking, big hearted, lovable, selfless, optimistic, loyal, rock-solid, role model, mentor, Bodie, country boy, strength, wonderful, courageous, philosopher, proud.

As for me, one word can sum it all up, my dad was my hero!

He was a man that his glass was never half full; it was always overflowing.

It’s also comforting to know that my dad left this world the same way he approached every day: willing to help a friend.

JoJo’s funeral will be held at Hilltop Cemetery, Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. Condolences would be appreciated at the funeral. Casual dress is encouraged. Due to the circumstances, there will be no reception held, to allow our family to grieve, but you will always be welcome in our home.

Thank you for being my Dad’s friend.

Thank you to Kelly Robertson, Jason Webb, Thad McKain, Carl Macht, and all of the EMS, firefighters, first responders and everyone else that tried to save JoJo. And thank you to everyone for their prayers, flowers, food, cards and blessings; and please know our prayers and thoughts are with all of you that grieve also.

JoJo you will be greatly missed!

obit---jenningsIMG_0963Tim Jennings, 61, passed away on May 9, surrounded by family. He spent six months in Denver undergoing a bone marrow transplant to fight against leukemia.  He returned to his home in Pagosa Springs on May 5.

Tim was born on March 14, 1953, in Chicago, Ill., to Louis and Patricia Jennings. While in high school he moved with his family to California. His friendship with his Chicago middle school girlfriend continued over the miles and she became his wife of 35 years. Alan Lee Penwell

Alan Lee Penwell, the brother of Chromo resident Laurel Penwell, died after a short battle with renal cell carcinoma on Wednesday, May 7, at the Lund Home Hospice of the Valley unit in Chandler, Ariz. He was 65.

Known as “Lee,” he was born to J.C. and Gloria Penwell on Oct. 17, 1948, in Fort Collins, where his family lived before moving to the Singing Pines Ranch on the Upper Piedra River near Pagosa Springs. Mr. Penwell spent his early years there hunting, fishing and exploring the mountains.

“His love of nature inspired his dream of being an Alaskan mountain man, which he began fulfilling in 1969,” according to his family, “when he moved to Alaska. Not long after arriving in the state, he made his way to Nabesna, where legendary big game guide Bill Ellis and his wife, Lorene, introduced him to Nabesna in the Wrangell Mountains.”

Mr. Penwell called Nabesna home for the next 40 years. He owned the Gun and Ammo Gun Shop in Anchorage from 1974 to 1986. He went on to specialize in antique and collectible firearms at Lee’s Shop. He also provided gunsmith services from his shop and home on Nabesna Road. “He was a constant presence at the state’s gun shows and was a respected authority on a wide variety of firearms,” according to his family.

Mr. Penwell worked for the National Park Service for 10 years and was the contract mail carrier for Nabesna Road for 15 years.

He and companion Vicki Rood were together for 26 years, marrying in February 2004 in Alaska.

“Most importantly, Lee was a faithful and loyal friend,” according to his family, “and he shared a deep commitment to and steadfast love with Vicki.”

Mr. Penwell is survived by his wife, Vicki Penwell, of Chandler, Ariz.; stepson Kyle Rood, of Estes Park; father J.C. Penwell, of the Veteran’s Home in Mt. Vernon, Mo.; mother Gloria Childress, of Portal, Ariz.; sisters Dale Triplett, of Redmesa, Laurel Penwell, of Chromo, Tracy Penwell, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and stepbrother John Jones, of Nixa, Mo.

obit---Martinez,-M-photoAll the hugs and kisses you could ever want was her specialty. Margaret “Margie” Martinez loved people and people loved her. She was called to hug and kiss our Lord on Tuesday, May 13.

Margaret Sally Martinez, or Margie, was born in Trujillo, Colo. on April 15, 1934, to Jose N. Maez and Floripa Archuleta Maez. While growing up, the family moved around following her Dad’s work into Utah, Nevada and Arizona, but always called Pagosa Springs home.

It was in Pagosa Springs where she met and married her beloved husband, Samuel Steven Martinez. Together they raised six children at the Lower Blanco, Edith and in the town of Pagosa Springs. After her children were raised, she went to work for Head Start as a teacher and helped to raise more children, who to this day, as adults, call her “grandma.” She also worked at Gambles, Jackisch Drug and at Jan’s Café. She loved the outdoors, rocks, Native American culture and people.

Margie never met a stranger. No matter where she crossed paths with friends, she always took time to kiss, hug and ask about family. Even people she did not know were friends she hadn’t made yet.

She volunteered at Chimney Rock Archaeological site as a greeter for one summer and loved doing it as she was a wonderful storyteller and because of her love for people. She was also a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and active in the Guadalupanas. However, she was first and foremost a wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Sam Martinez, in 1999; her son, Rick Martinez, in 1998; and a grandson, Jr. Martinez, in 1990.

She is survived by five of her children: Steve Martinez (Cathy), of Bloomfield, N.M.; Mable Barber, of Pagosa Springs; Jody Martinez (Barbara), of Pagosa; Nina Schwandt (Steve), of Lawton, Okla.; Gloria Mohr (Steve), of Wichita, Kan.; a brother, Morgan Maez, of North Carolina.; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, extended family and many, many friends.

The world is a much sadder place with her passing and the hugs and kisses will be sorely missed. However, Heaven is a happier place and rest assured that she will be there waiting with hugs and kisses when we meet again.
